I don’t know about you but I’ve read some amazing books so far this summer. The one that really sticks out to me is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. I finished it two weeks ago and I am still thinking about it constantly. It was an absolutely genius book that I believe everyone should read, therefore I am going to ‘review’ this book today!
Notice I put review in parentheses. This is because I actually already posted a review of this book a few days ago, one that I was actually proud of. The thing is, the more I thought about it, the more I realized I did everything wrong. This book cannot be reviewed. I went into this book blindly and I felt my readers should have the opportunity to do so as well. My review didn’t have spoilers, but I think it’s best to know absolutely nothing about the plot before reading. So, long story short, I trashed that review and I apologize if you read it before I realized my mistake. Now I shall redo this review, but more as an opinion post, as to not spoil anybody’s experience.
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
You guys. I loved this book.
But I only loved it after I let it digest. I knew it was a very good book when I finished it, but I had to let some time pass and I realized how incredibly smart it was. This is one reason why this book is worth reading: It gets better with time and is something you will want to read several times.
Another thing I loved was the writing. The style of writing the author used has gotten a lot of mixed reviews, but as a person who loves poetry and metaphors, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The mystery. This book appears to be a normal contemporary story, but it is so much more. Everything causes you to be suspicious, and you won’t even know why!
The moment. There is a moment when everything makes sense and it is so satisfying. The author tied every loose end in this perfectly and it was awesome.
There are so many good things about this book. That’s not to say there weren’t some bad things. I found some parts very repetitive and slightly boring. But I still think that everyone should read this book simply because the element of surprise is rare in books these days, since so many are very predictable.
I know this review was weird, short and not very helpful, but I felt the need to share this little gem.

When I first saw it in bookstores a while ago I thought it was like a book about war because I never really saw the cover close up and I thought they were wearing helmets. #whoops. Um, anyway… now it’s totally on my TBR. Great Review!

Haha I can see why you would think that! I’m really glad to hear you liked the review. I was a little worried since it’s short and kind of choppy, because I didn’t want to give away too much! Yay! So happy you added it to your TBR:) It’s a really interesting book.

This post is awesome! I totally get how you feel (not with We Were Liars specifically, I haven’t read it yet but I really want to now!) about not wanting to talk directly about THE book, but instead qualities that made the book amazing. If that makes sense. 😉

Thank you Olivia!! Yeah, the whole plot is mysterious, and I felt that just by talking about the plot I might be giving things away! It’s a really good book, so I still wanted to review it 😀 If you read it, I hope you like it a much as I did!
